To mark the date, a central event is being held at Praça da República (Republic Square) in Luanda. The proclamation of Independence marked the of a process of general armed insurrection by Angolans against the Portuguese regime, started on February 4,1961. This process became officially know as the day of the armed struggle for national liberation. The country’s process of total self-affirmation involved thousands of patriots, including politician’s religious and anonymous citizens, who shed their blood and paid with their lives to see the dream of freedom come true. The proclamation of National Independence represents the highest point of a centuries-old struggle for self-determination, waged by fearless kings and queens from various regions of country. I is one of the greatest milestone in history of the country, which put a end to the Portuguese colonial regime, after several decades in search of freedom, sovereignty and affirmation of its people. National Independence, proclaimed by the President of the MPLA, António Agostinho Neto, the first Head of State of the young nation, marked the beginning of a difficult political, diplomatic, social and economic trajectory. This is one of the main achievements of the Angolans, as sovereign people, which has been able to overcame various adventures along its trajectory, with emphasis on a violent and bloody war, for 27 years. National Independence opened room for a free country, which is still looking, 47 years later, for the best ways to fight poverty and social inequalities, in order to achieve sustainable development.
